Project Description
Small Edo-Period Tanegashima Hand Cannon with Aoi-mon and Dragon in Gold Iroe
- Status: Sold
- Kanteisho: None
A finely constructed small tanegashima from the Edo period, notable for its compact form and richly decorative treatment. The firearm is fitted with a short barrel and proportionally small stock. The stock is lacquered in deep black and decorated with flowing karakusa scrolls in gold and reddish-brown maki-e. Prominently displayed on both sides of the butt is a bold aoi-mon (triple hollyhock crest) executed in gold iroe, a motif closely associated with the Tokugawa clan and frequently seen on high-quality Edo-period arms made for retainers or official presentation.
The breech and muzzle are adorned with finely engraved dragon and cloud motifs, the iron surface worked with dense, confident chiseling. Select details are highlighted with gold inlay, creating a striking contrast against the dark iron patina. This is an elegant and visually compelling example of decorative Edo-period tanegashima, combining martial form with refined aesthetic expression.
